Description
Municipality of Amaliados, Savalia, Kasidiaris area (property of Ch. Kasari). Christos Matzanas (Ζ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on further excavations at three burial mounds with clusters of graves. The oldest concentration was dated by pottery to the Archaic period and consisted of roughly worked stones and two hearths, along with kylikes, lamps and plates but no burials (Fig. 1). The Classical cluster dated to the second half of the 5th c. B.C. included the sarcophagi discovered in the previous year, as well as three tile covered graves with grave goods (Figs. 2,3,4) including pottery (Figs. 5,6,7) and various metal objects. The large number of broken eating and drinking vessels, temporary furnishings and food remains associated with the graves, led the excavator to suggest the presence of feasting associated with burial ritual (Figs. 8, 9).
Excavations were undertaken on the Late Roman cluster of graves (A’), dated from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD, leading to the discovery of a further five tile covered graves. Excavations were also undertaken in the area to the south-west of the second cluster (B’) of Late Roman graves, which had been investigated during previous seasons.
