Description
Vartholomio, Katsiveri or Botsikia. Christos Matzanas (Ζ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a wall belonging to a rectangular construction (13.0x1.70-2.50 m.) (Fig. 1). Attached to the northern side of the wall was a niche (0.60×0.40×0.20 m.) (Fig. 2), while small numbers of prehistoric pottery sherds and flint chipped stone artefacts were also collected. The sediments also contained quantities of charcoal. At 4.80 m. along the wall towards the south-east, it changed direction towards the south-west, forming a circular construction which was identified by the excavator as a tholos tomb. Just before the turn in the wall was a large roundish sandstone block which was probably a step into the tomb (Fig. 4). Two Mycenaean pots were also collected from the periphery of the tomb.
To the north-east of the tomb was a layer of scattered stones, chipped stone artefacts, sherds of prehistoric pottery and ash (Figs. 3, 10). Similar finds were collected in the area to the south-east of the tomb (Fig. 5). An extended burning layer (2.50x2.0x 0.25 m.) was identified within the circular construction (Figs. 6, 7). It contained flint chipped stone artefacts and Mycenaean and post-Mycenaean pottery, but mainly animal bones (Fig. 9). In the centre of the burning layer were a series of seven distinct grooves which may in fact be modern tyre tracks (Fig. 8).
