Soulario region, Ag. Konstantinos site. Municipality of Megalopoli - 2008
Soularion
Soulario region, Ag. Konstantinos site. Municipality of Megalopoli. Leonidas Souchleris (ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the Classical remains, dating between the sixth and the fourth century BC, and the Byzantine cemetery found near the Soulario region. This excavation was part of the construction process for the new motorway connecting Leuktron to Sparta.
The space excavated was 500 sq. meters. A destruction layer of black and red painted roof tiles was found on top of the architectural remains. The walls found formed three main spaces, as well as some yards surrounding them (fig. 1-2). The pottery sherds found were black-painted and of good quality, some kraters with painted vegetal decoration, and some geometric sherds (apart from monochrome cooking ware). They dated the site between the late sixth century and the late Classical times (fifth-fourth century BC).
The Byzantine cemetery consisted of fifteen burials (cist graves and simple burials). They were all oriented E-W and contained few grave-goods. They had disrupted the stratigraphy and destroyed parts of the ancient walls. The excavation was assigned to the proper Byzantine Ephorate (25th EBA).
