Makri, Motorway between Tripoli and Kalamata - 2008
Pallandion, Besiri
Makri, Motorway between Tripoli and Kalamata. Stamatis Frintzilas (ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the seven trial trenches made to check the digging for the construction of the new motorway. Apart from large amounts of monochrome pottery, a tomb was also located.
The tomb was covered with a stone slab. Almost the entire skeleton was found, although badly conserved. A closed monochrome vessel, oriented E-W, was found in the feet area, on the E end of the tomb. Three bronze rings were found in the left side of the right thigh, and bronze earrings were found on both sides of the skull. Also, various beads were found near the skull and the torso. Signs of burning were identified, mostly in the skull area.
Another burial in the form of a cinerary urn was found in the area, and it was dated between the sixth and the seventh century AD (fig. 1). The pottery style, as well as the usage of cremation as a burial technique, led to the assumption that the tombs were Slavic. The excavation was then transferred to the 25th ΕΒΑ, for jurisdiction reasons.
