Description
Megalopolitiki Chora, Perivolia. Stamatis Fritzilas (ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavations in the area of the ancient citadel of Aimonion. Initial work was concentrated within an area defined to the north-west, by the Church of the village and to the south-east, by the Kourialou Stream. The finds included a few tile fragments and pottery. Investigations in the area of Potistika produced part of a stone paved road and the remains of buildings which had their façades along the road. Also found was plain and black-glazed pottery (a lekanis decorated with a running spiral) dated to the first half of the 4th c. B.C., (Fig. 1) along with two decorated loom weight and red-figured pottery.
Investigations also took place on a hill at the site of Vromoxilo, outside of the village of Perivolia where a cemetery was located. On the top of the hill were two looted graves, with pottery and human bones widely scattered (Fig. 2). The finds included a bronze bracelet decorated with dots and lines which was dated to the Byzantine period, along with pottery.
