Description
Dromos Kalogerikou and Dematos. Leonidas Souchleris and Stamatis Fritzilas (ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on the excavation of an ancient chariot road in the area of Kalogeriko which connected the town of Pallantion with Asea and Megalopolis. Following an E-W orientation, its surface was well preserved and in some areas wheel ruts were visible, 1.4 m. apart. In places the upper road surface consisted of levelled bedrock, while in others there were gaps where upstanding bedrock had been blasted out (Fig. 1). It was preserved over a length was 912 m., with the sides supported by rubble retaining walls. The upper surface was laid during the medieval and was in continuous use up until the 19th century. The maximum width of the Medieval road was 3.48 m. Close to the road was a circular pit of 0.43 m. diameter, sunk into the bedrock and filled with animal bones. Another section of the above road was found in the area of Dema (Fig. 2).
