Megara - 2007
Megara
Megara, 24 Minoas Street (O.T. 61, property of Aik. Gkeli and Th. Michalarou). Eirini Svana (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation of post-antique finds, at the site of a production centre.
Most notably lamps of the 3rd through 6th centuries AD were found, along with 80 bronze coins. Masonry of the associated structure were medium-sized, and some thought to be in secondary use. Circular deposit pits were found beneath the floor, containing pieces of a monolithic column, early Byzantine storage vessel fragments, and pieces of at least 13 amphoras.
A tiled pipe running SW-NE, although the origins of the pipe have not been found. A few ceramic sherds were found inside, some of which came from the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods. On the N side of the plot, a disturbed Archaic period grave was found, that did not contain any human remains. Pottery from the area included two kotylai of the sixth century BC decorated with animals, amphoras, and pyxides.
