Megara - 2007
Megara
Megara, 4 Sachtouris Street (O.T. 135, property of I.G. Kallergi). Eirini Svana (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of various Late Classical period remains, and a Roman period workshop.
The most substantial Late Classical period remains constituted an enclosure c.3m below the road surface, built onto the bedrock. An enclosure was found (Fig. 1 and 2) along with black painted pottery sherds of the second half of the fourth century BC.
The workshop area of the Roman period comprises two kilns, the earliest of which was built reusing material from the late fourth century BC buildings (Fig. 3). It seems that a second kiln was constructed further E of the original, after the first had been abandoned. A number of vessels were found in the area relating to pottery production, including amphoras, lekanes, and hydriae. The structures were almost completely destroyed in a subsequent phase of destruction and rebuilding.
