Salamis - 2008
Salamina, Salamis
Salamis, Ifaistos Street. Triadafyllia Kattoula (ΚΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries made during the construction of the city’s new sewer network.
At this site a large Mycenaean chamber tomb was found (Fig. 1), thought to be part of the same cemetery discovered in 1965 and 1995.
The dome of chamber A was located 1.20m below the road surface, and had collapsed into the chamber. The chamber was rectangular in shape, with dimensions 2.50 x 3m. The entrance was on the S side, closed up with stones. Chamber B was W of chamber A. The two chambers were connected internally, and the floor of chamber B was 0.30m higher than chamber A.
Chamber A (Fig. 2): three intact vessels were found, including a kalathos, three cylindrical alabastra, and a closed amphora. There were also two cylindrical alabastra, three further alabasters, and 22 small finds including bronze hooks, stone tools, and steatite objects.
Chamber B (Fig. 3 and 4): 26 vessels were found in the centre of the chamber, and a few bones. These included two cooking pots, a cylindrical alabastron, a small jug, six closed amphorae, four further alabastra, a kalathos, a kylix, and a lekythos. Small funds included stone loom weights, steatite weights, and lead hooks. Seven further vessels were found in the NW sector, and a female figurine. Sieved fill soil yielded two further loomweights, a marble cube, and lead and copper pieces. Finds date to the 14th and 13th century BC.
