Salamis - 2008
Salamina, Salamis
Salamis, Intersection of Profitis Ilias Street and Laivera Street. Triadafyllia Kattoula (ΚΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries made during the construction of the city’s new sewer network.
At this site a disturbed Mycenaean chamber tomb was found (Fig. 1). The chamber was 3.80 x 2m, oriented EW. The dome had collapsed, and inside there were scattered skeletal remains of at least four individuals. Amphoras and alabastra of the fourteenth century BC were found here, as well as female figurines, seven spindle whorls, two stone tools, and one stone engraved bead.
Close to the intersection between M. Alexandros Street and Dios Street, a Mycenaean period pit grave was found (Fig. 2). The grave had already been destroyed by previous sewer works, but it could be deduced the grave was oriented EW with dimensions 1.80 x 0.80.
