Megara
Megara, Omiros and Diogenos Street (O.T. 48, property of G. Panagou). Panagiota Avgerinou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of Hellenistic and Roman period buildings, including a Roman bathhouse and two pottery kilns (Fig. 1 and 2).
Four Hellenistic and Late Roman period buildings are found in the NW part of the plot, found alongside a number of Hellenistic and Roman period pottery sherds. The fourth building was found to have had a white marble mosaic floor, and sections of wall from this building might have been reused in relation to a late Roman bath house, previously found across the road from this site.
Two pottery kilns were also discovered. Kiln 1 measured 2.65 x 2.95m and was found in an area covered extensively by sherds of pottery dating to the Late Roman period including amphoras with high necks and pointed toes, and also lechanes, jugs, trefoil oinochoai and a few lamps. The deposit also contained pieces of tegulae mammatae, tile, marble fragments, and some bovine bones. Three coins were also found dating to the second and third quarters of the fourth century BC. The left shoulder of a marble statue was also found here, as were some glass vessels, a marble basin fragment, and the figurine of a standing male figure.
Kiln 2 was rectangular and measured 3.17 x 2.62m. Associated with the kiln were found sherds of Roman period amphoras, deformed through excessive firing, along with pieces of tegulae mammatae. This kiln is thought to date later than the previous kiln. To the W of the area two marble statue fragments were found: a child’s head with braided hair, and a piece of a naked male youth from the limb to the upper thigh.
