Magoula, Property of P. Florou. Afroditi Maltezou (Ε ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of fragmentary remains of a house of the Roman/Late Roman period (Fig. 1). The remains adhere to the urban plan of Roman Sparta. A rectangular space/room with a mosaic floor of geometric decoration surrounded by rooms was found (Fig. 2). Above the mosaic there was a destruction layer containing tiles and plaster. Among the walls that define the mosaic, architectural members were located as spolia. In the Roman house later repairs, extensions, and changes are dated to the late Roman period. In the rooms to the N and W of the mosaic room destruction layers were found. The oldest architectural remains date to the Hellenistic period and are founded on the bedrock. The plan cannot be reconstructed due to fragmentation.
The pottery found during the excavation was mainly Roman and Hellenistic, but also late Roman, Archaic and Classical examples were found. Small finds: marble head of Heracles (MS 16601), a complete amphora of Roman/Late Roman period (MS 16600a+b), fragments of marble revetments, fragments of wall plaster, a large quantity of fragments of glass vessels, fragments of flint. Coins: 1 silver-plated and 1 bronze coin from the reign of Constantine I (AD 307-337), 3 bronze coins of Laconian issue of the years 31-7 BC, 48-40 BC, AD 41-54, a bronze coin of the years of Constantine II (AD 337-340), a bronze coin of the Emperor Maximillian (AD 286-305).
