Zominthos - 2016
Anogeia
Zominthos. E. Sapouna Sakellaraki (ASA) reports on continued excavation of the site in several areas of the large building complex (Fig. 1). Excavation of room 59 was completed to the floor level on the ground floor, where fragments of pithoi and other pottery were found. In the neighbouring rooms 17 and 38 central pillars were found, while in 38 there was a metal-working kiln on the ground floor and, on the first storey, a sealstone was found.
The 3 compartments of room 47 further S (also in use in more recent times) were investigated and produced: ceramics, a stone rosette used as a pin-head, 2 bronze daggers and fragments of rock crystal. In neighbouring room 37 4 column bases were found at ground level, as well as benches on the N and W sides, a steatite sealstone and an ivory fragment belonging to a piece of furniture. A piece of a Mycenaean stirrup jar provides evidence for the chronology of the insertion of an interior wall in this room, taking 2 of the columns out of use.
Room 40 was paved with stone on its ground-floor level and had benches on 3 sides. On the first storey, the W part of the floor was made of clay, while the E part was paved. Finds included: a large pithos, grinding stones, a bronze dagger, 2 bored stone objects in the shape of an eye and a clay brazier.
On the E side of the complex room 24 was investigated, in whose deeper levels earlier walls were found. More recent walls of the Roman period attest to its later use.
In room 51 the base of a polythyro was found leading to room 34A, and a door between rooms 51 and 52, while in room 53, further W, benches were found on its N and E sides, as well as a probable altar. More interesting was a deposit in the NW corner of room 33, which produced over 200 vessels, mostly conical cups, rhyta and cookpots.
