Description
Asine, Property of M. Bilikou. Georgia Ivou (Δ’ΕΠΚΑ) reports on new discoveries at a Late Classical/Hellenistic cemetery. Burials of the same chronology and older have been investigated in previous years in other parts of the property as well as adjacent ones.
In total 21 graves were identified, laid out in three parallel rows in a N-S orientation. Of these, ten were tile covered graves, six were sunk into the bedrock and roofed with poros slabs and two were pit graves covered with flat stones and tiles. In addition there was one pit grave covered by clay slabs and two in sarcophagi. Most of the bodies had been placed facing east. Three graves contained two bodies, four were of children and six graves were severely disturbed. In most cases the graves were poorly furnished with just a few small pots, sea shells and rare metal objects. The exceptions were graves XIV, XVII, XIX which were more richly adorned (Figs. 1, 2). Based on the pottery, grave XIV was dated to the final 4th to early 3rd century BC.
In the area to the east of the cemetery was a poros stone quarry which providing the material used to construct the graves.
