Description
Argos, 59 Korinthou Street (Ο.Τ. 16, Property of P. Th. Liakopoulou). Eleni Sarri (Δ' ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a rectangular building (X.1) with excavated dimensions of 3.0 m. by 2.70 m (Fig. 1). Only the eastern, western and southern rubble walls were preserved. The presence of a pit containing unfinished pots found in the north of the building as well as a horseshoe shaped feature, possibly a sink, points to the industrial character of the building. From the interior of the building as well as other features were retrieved various bronze objects and pottery dated to the end of the 2nd to the first half of the 1st centuries BC. However, the presence of pottery and other finds dated to the 6th to 5th centuries BC also suggested earlier use.
Within the building was one pit (I) and four (II-V) cist burials. A child burial was also identified next to grave III. Graves II-V were dated to the Early Geometric/Geometric periods, while grave I appears to date to the 11th c. BC. The body was placed in a contracted position and was richly furnished with jewellery and pots.
