Description
Sparta, Lysandrou Street (O.T. 127, property of Vr. Leopoulou). Maria Florou (5th ΕΒΑ) reports on the discovery of a road surface aligned on a N/NE-S/SW orientation, consisting of successive layers of beaten earth, pebbles, tile fragments and pottery sherds. The road led up to the acropolis of the ancient city of Sparti and was probably part of the complex road system that was developed south of the city during the Roman period. Along both side of the road were parts of rubble walls and five pipes made of clay and stone.
In the north-west of the excavated plot was a roughly circular kiln between 2.90 and 3.10 m. in diameter, built of rubble and tiles and was bound by mortar (Fig. 1). At 1.15 m. below the surface was the feeding mouth (stoke-hole) with walls made of successive layers of fired bricks bound by strong mortar. The structure is dated from the 3rd to the beginning of the 4th centuries AD. In the western part of the area were Roman/post-Roman and Byzantine walls, along with a well. In the eastern part of the area were walls of uncertain date, two Roman burials (pit and cist) and two further wells.
Additional finds included Hellenistic to post Roman pottery, metal objects (iron nails and copper), stone and glass objects, glass pots and 32 coins.
