Sparta, Lysandrou Street - 2007

In trench I were six partial walls (1, δ΄, η΄, 19, 20 and 27), including those identified in previous years. They were made of rubble and bricks with strong mortar, although due to their fragmentary condition, their character and date cannot be inferred. In the western part of trench I and very close to a well (2) identified in the year 2000, was another well, consisting of a shaft sunk into the bedrock, from which large quantities of Hellenistic pottery were recovered. In trench II was another well (4), again carefully sunk into the bedrock to a depth of 1.55 m., with a diameter of 0.9 m. The lower walls were dressed with rubble while around the upper section were circular clay hoops of 0.7 m. in diameter and height. Pottery of the Roman and Mid-Byzantine periods was collected from within. Fragments of clay pipes were also excavated in trench II. The excavations produced Hellenistic and Roman pottery, fragments of bronze and iron objects and clay figurines, along with 16 coins. Due to their fragmentary nature, the character of the architectural remains cannot be assessed with certainty. However, the excavator believes that they may be associated with the remains of a Roman bath complex (valaneion) excavated in a nearby property.
