Description
Aghios Stephanos, Kouremenou Hill, Byronos 5 (property of A. and E. Petsiou). Dimitrios Palaiologos (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) and Maria Stephanopoulou (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on the discovery of prehistoric building remains (Fig. 1). The earliest remains date to the Final Neolithic period and were founded on levelled surfaces made of beaten earth, clay and rubble. These remains include an oval hut-like structure with a carefully constructed rubble floor and a circular rock-cut pit. The latter contained numerous pottery sherds including some from cheese pots.
EHI and EHII rubble walls were also found. Two of these form the corner of a building which appears to have been in use in both periods. The area appears to have been disturbed in the Late Classical period as attested by relevant pottery sherds. Small finds from the area include Late Neolithic pottery sherds (some from saucers), small quantities of EHI and EHII pottery sherds, obsidian flakes and blades, a flint arrowhead and a stone pendant. The excavation was conducted by T. Fragopoulou under the supervision of the authors of this report.
