ANOIXI, Leoforos Marathonos - 2008

Anoixi, Leoforos Marathonos 33 (property of M. Gavalaki and Co.). Dimitrios Palaiologos (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) and Maria Stephanopoulou (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on the discovery of Classical buildings and other remains dating from the prehistoric to the Byzantine periods (Fig. 1). Two buildings were excavated. The earliest dates to the second half of the 5^th c. B.C., and consists of two large and one small rooms. Its walls are built with rubble. A bronze coin and few pottery sherds were found in the building, which appears to have been destroyed from the flooding of the nearby river. The second, later building had a semicircular retaining wall. It is contemporary to a circular rubble structure and another wall. Black-glazed and undecorated pottery sherds, as well as coins date these in the 4^th c. B.C. All three structures were destroyed by flood.

Additional remains in the area include Hellenistic rubble walls and a cairn containing small quantities of Neolithic pottery sherds. Small finds from the area include Classical and Hellenistic black-glazed sherds, bronze coins, lead clamps, loom weights, badly-fired pottery sherds, slags, a 2^nd c. B.C. terracotta figurine of a seated man, few Byzantine pottery sherds, EH, LH and Late Geometric pottery sherds, large quantities of obsidian and few Archaic pottery sherds. The excavation was conducted by A. Romanidou under the supervision of the authors of this report.
