Description
Kifissia, Aiglis 20 (O.T. 1001, property of B. Skartsouni). Maria Stephanopoulou(B’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of 4 tile graves and 2 secondary inhumations dating to the Late Roman period (3rd-4th A.D.). Additionally, a pit was excavated which predates the burials. The pit was most likely a kiln since it contained large quantities of charcoal. A human skeleton and one of an animal were found on top of the charcoal. Dirt and rubble had been thrown on top of these.
Tile grave 1 contained two skeletons in supine position and an oinochoe. A bronze coin was found near one of the skulls. Tile grave 2 contained a skeleton in supine position, a coin found under the skull, a phiale and 2 oinochoes. Another skull with a bronze coin on its lower jaw was found west of this burial. Tile grave 3 contained a skeleton in supine position. Tile grave 4 was smaller than the others and appears to have been for a child burial. It contained a lekanis, in which an oinochoe and another vessel had been placed.
The first secondary inhumation consisted of bones, bone fragments and a skull underneath which a bronze coin was found. The votive offerings include a lekanis with phiale placed inside it, a second phiale and glass sherds. The second secondary inhumation consisted of two skulls and numerous bones, a lekanis with a lamp placed inside of it and glass sherds (Fig. 1).
