Description
Acharnes, Monomati, Ortansias and Apsitheas Steets (property of Valais Stavros & Co.). Eirini Anagnostopoulou (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a 6th c. B.C. – 3rd c. A.D. cemetery containing 28 pyres, 8 inurned cremations, 4 tile graves, 1 pit grave, 1 cist grave and the funerary peribolos (Figs. 1, 2). The peribolos was 10.2 m. long and was constructed with rubble. Only 1 inurned cremation and a pyre were dug outside the area it delimited (Fig 3).
The pits for the pyres were of various shapes and sizes, and finds from these include a faience pendant, a small silver hoop, a bronze coin, pieces from bronze artefacts, a bird figurine, numerous lekythoi and fragments from terracotta figurines. Pithoi and pointed amphorae had been used for the inurned cremations. Finds from these include black-figure and black-glazed vessels, and a bronze coin. The tile graves contained a bronze coin and a terracotta lamp. Tile grave 3 contained a skeleton on the chest of which lay a smaller skull (Fig. 4). The pit grave contained a skeleton and a bronze coin (Fig. 5). The cist grave contained 11 vessels and 4 bronze bosses.
Additional finds from the area include numerous sherds primarily from lekythoi, 6 intact vessels (two of which are lekythoi), a bronze coin, a bronze hoop, a bronze foil, a piece from a bronze artefact, a fragment from a glass unguentarium and a glass sherd.
A Roman farmstead and a Roman bath were also excavated at a short distance from this cemetery.
