Marathon, Marathonas
Marathon. Brexiza, the Egyptian sanctuary. I. Dekoulakou (ASA) reports on continued excavation. One of the eight rooms (room 1) of the central part of the sanctuary was excavated (Figs 1,2). Its walls were constructed with rubble stones and mortar. The interior was covered in red and off-white plaster. The fill inside the room contained bricks, Laconian roof-tiles, Roman pottery sherds, a small trefoil-lipped oinochoe, a Corinthian lamp with the inscription ΛΟΥΚΙΟΥ, numerous 2nd c. A.D. fragments from lamps and a ridge tile with the inscription ΑΘΗΝΑΙΟΥ. Finally, finds from various periods were excavated: black-glazed sherds and obsidian flakes.
