GERAKAS, Stavros - 2009
GERAKAS
Gerakas, Stavros, Aghiou Ioanni Theologou and Patriarchou Gregoriou E’ Streets (O.T. 92, property of A. Tarasi). D.N. Christodoulou (Β’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a Middle Byzantine building complex (Fig 1), which is contemporary with the nearby 11th c. church of Aghios Ioannis Theologos. Three rooms and a courtyard were excavated. One of the rooms contained two silos and a pit. One of the two silos was sealed with a slab. Another room contained a well lined with hydraulic concrete and a pit filled with large stones. The courtyard lies in the middle of the property. A silo sealed with a slab (Fig 2) and a coin were found there. Two walls were excavated from the south side of the courtyard. An intact trefoil-mouthed oinochoe (Fig 3), two iron nails and a bronze ring were found in the vicinity of one of the walls. Finally, another silo was found at a small distance from the courtyard. Numerous 9th-12th c. sherds were retrieved. Some of these are green-glazed.
