ATHENS - GHAZI - 2009
Athens, Ghazi, 21 Iakkhou and 28 Boutadon Streets. M. Tsichli (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a 4th c. B.C. bronze casting workshop (Fig 1). 2 wells, 2 walls, a casting pit and seven shallow pits were found. The casting pit was piriform in shape, had entrance steps and high walls (Fig 2). Parts of the walls were constructed from mud bricks. Internally it had a bench and two small pits for the collection of the melting wax. There was an opening on one side for the regulation of the temperature. Bricks, mud bricks, roof-tiles, lumps of clay, pieces of moulds, slags and pottery sherds (cooking pots, small black-glazed vessels and lamps) were found in the casting pit. The shallow pits were most likely used for the casting of small objects or bronze melting.
