MOSCHATO - 2009
Moschaton
Moschato, Thessalonikis and Androu Streets (property of B. Kotoula). M. Petritaki (ΚΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a Classical burial and prehistoric floors (Fig 1). A stream flows through the property and the archaeological layers are highly disturbed. A shaft grave was excavated containing a well-preserved skeleton. Four poros blocks were found in the area of the grave. One of these was the base for a marble lekythos, which would have been the sema of the aforementioned burial. The other blocks attest to the existence of more burials in antiquity. Other finds include pottery sherds of various dates (there are many geometric sherds), and a LH IIIC figurine (Fig 2). Finally, floors were revealed below the layer of the cemetery. The floors date in the pre-Mycenaean period and consist of small and larger pebbles, gravel, and reddish soil.
