PIRAEUS - 2009
Pirée (port), Piraeus Harbour
Piraeus, 57-63 Fragiadon, 38 Makrygianni and 64 Ionidon Streets (property of O.S.K). K. Axioti (ΚΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a road and two building blocks on either side of it (Fig 1). The road runs on the E-W axis. A façade with a large threshold was found on the north side of the road. A drain and a cistern lie on either side of the threshold. The houses on this side of the road were not preserved. Two cisterns and an extensive drainage system, however, attest to their existence in antiquity. A house was excavated on the south side of the road. It is dated in the last quarter of the 4th century B.C. and has an architectural plan, which is representative of late Classical – early Hellenistic houses. It consists of a square, central courtyard and 14 surrounding rooms. A drain and a cistern were found in the courtyard. The rooms had pebble-floors and drains. Some of the walls attest to an earlier Classical phase.
M. Anetakis, E. Gabriel, K. Demetriou, S. Kariotis and A. Soumpasi supervised the excavation under the direction of K. Axioti.
