PATRAS, 40 Nikita Street - 2006

Patras. 40 Nikita Street (property of I. Messala). L. Papacosta (Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of architectural traces in the northern part of the plot (the south part having been damaged by the construction of house basements). Three walls date to the Roman period: two formed an angle (with a water channel near their foundation), while a third, in opus mixtum, likely belonged to a different construction phase. In the west of the plot a Hellenistic wall of field stones ran east-west (with a further contemporary wall perpendicular to it). A further such pair of walls, of the same period and construction, continues into the neighbouring plot to the north. The plaster floor of what is probably a destroyed water channel was found between the two parallel, east-west walls. Many Hellenistic black-glaze sherds were recovered from the lowest levels, especially in the south and below the first of the east-west walls mentioned above (where a large concentration of pottery included plates, skyphoi etc.).
