Description
Patras Junction of Pantokratoros and Einardou Streets (property of V. Legka). L. Papacosta (Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of fragmentary remains indicating activity on this plot from the early Hellenistic to early Byzantine period. Eleven Late Roman-Early Byzantine walls were partly destroyed and could not be connected to individual structures. Ten Roman-Late Roman water channels were exposed around the north, east and west edges of the excavation: a small rectangular cistern in the north of the plot was likely related.
Earlier activity on this site is indicated by a deep round refuse pit which partially underlies the Roman cistern. Numerous (mostly Hellenistic) finds from the fill include terracotta lamps, conical and disc-shaped loomweights, sherds of pithoi, transport amphorae, and black-glaze vessels, and nine bronze coins.
Portable finds collected from the wider area include two stone drums from an unfluted column, a second- to third-century terracotta lamp mould with a depiction of Tyche on the disc, and three Roman bronze coins.
