PATRAS, 49 Soteriadou Street - 2006

Patras. 49 Soteriadou Street (property of A. Ioannidi). L. Papacosta (Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of part of a Late Roman house, later extended and remodeled. The walls were built with unworked stones, tile and cement. Two floor levels were found: the first was of beaten earth with fine gravel and lumps of cement laid on a bedding of unworked stones, tile and cement, while the second was of square bricks. The surrounding walls were in opus testaceum. Three water channels in the centre of the plot may have served the house (one led into a brick-built well). East of the plot, a vaulted sewer shaft, traced for 4.7m, is associated with a paved Roman north-south street (parts of which were found in previous rescue excavations on nearby plots); in this stretch the paving had been removed entirely (probably for later re-use). A vaulted structure partly exposed at the south edge of the plot likely flanked the road on the east side.
