PATRAS, 116 V. Rouphou Street - 2006

Patras. 116 V. Rouphou Street. L. Papacosta (Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a group of 13 rooms or open areas with walls of different periods, from Hellenistic to Late Byzantine: remains were re-used in successive phases of superposed construction. A Byzantine cistern (of which the floor is preserved) had destroyed a potter’s kiln below it. The kiln, together with four tile graves (without grave goods), and a section of a road, were found at this lower level and date to the Roman period. The 4m-wide road, preserved to a length of 7m, ran north-south down the eastern side of the plot: its surface was of beaten earth, small stones, tile chips, and sherds of the first century AD. The central sewer, below surface level, cut into the fabric of the Late Hellenistic road beneath.
