Description
Patras. 49 Agiou Dimitriou Street. L. Papacosta (Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a further section of the cobbled road exposed in previous excavations. A covered drain which ran alongside the road had a small cistern for rainwater and a supporting wall to the west. Parallel to this drain, to the west, was a further terracotta drainpipe. Roman buildings on both sides of the road were built in opus reticulatum.
A group of at least three small interconnecting rooms, with channels opened perpendicular to the roughly-built walls, likely belonged to a workshop. The east wall was built over a Hellenistic predecessor, and was raised and extended several times using spolia in secondary use (such as large worked blocks and a floral antefix). The eastern room (1) contained a large water channel with two buttresses and sections of marble revetment, smaller conduits, and the angle of two walls; to the south was a small round well.
