Description
Gonia (Iakovou property). E. Balomenou (ΛΖ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a large quantity of Late Helladic IIA – IIIB1 sherds including decorated finewares during surface prospection on the wider plateau near the excavated remains. In 2003, therefore, six test trenches were excavated to a depth of 1.6m, revealing Mycenaean pottery, obsidian and flint, plus architectural remains. It was shown that Mycenaean walls were constructed on a well prepared leveling course of soil, pebbles and clay. Two walls were exposed forming a corner. Similarities with architecture revealed in a 2006 excavation at Isthmia may indicate a similar, Late Helladic IIB-IIIA1 date.
Mycenaean chamber tombs discovered during illegal excavation at nearby Gyriza likely relate to the Gonia settlement. While the circumstances of discovery preclude the restoration of burial assemblages, fine quality vases including Vapheio cups, kylikes and goblets, alabastra, stirrup jars, semi-globular cups. An imported, probably Argive amphoriskos with applied decoration is noted. Figurines include one of a women kneading or washing at a basin.
