Description
Agios Vasileios (Xerokampi). A. Vasilogamvrou (ASA) reports that new survey revealed the presence of further structures around the central court. The likely presence of further burials in the north cemetery was also indicated.
Limited excavation in Building A confirmed that a wall with an unusual construction of stones and mud brick dates to Late Helladic IIIA1. Attempts to clarify the date of other structures and the relationship between them encountered difficulties for want of any significant chronological distinction between a continuous succession of constructions in the same location.
Four pithoi were found in the area of the west stoa. Over the stoa floor were fragments of the floor of the upper storey, and nearby (confined to a small area), 29 fragments of Linear B tablets. These tablets came from a mixed Byzantine and Mycenaean level and very few joins can be made between them. The stoa was destroyed at the end of Late Helladic IIIIA2 or the start of IIIB1. Fragments of further tablets were dispersed in later levels. A total of 52 tablet fragments have now been found.
Investigation of the south stoa and the north cemetery also continued. Scattered tombs were examined, including six that were undisturbed or contained displaced initial burials. These graves were generally poor, but the few goods offered date them to Late Helladic I-II,
