Description
Naupaktos, East Cemetery. Ph. Saranti (ΛΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of further tombs during work on the water supply network in the Varnarachi area.
Dexameni Hill: two partially preserved pithos burials, robbed in antiquity, were found on the north slope of the hill, set obliquely northeast-southwest. Pithos I (maximum preserved length 1.07m, internal width 0.84m) contained skeletal remains of at least two individuals. Pithos II (maximum preserved length 1.9m, internal width 0.8-0.9m) contained a few traces of bone.
Herakleous Street. Three further burials were found during the laying of a pipeline along the street. Cist tomb I had been disturbed during previous pipe-laying in the 1960s: it contained the remains of a single burial plus three broken vases and a bronze sheet. Tile grave II, on to the north side of the street, contained a well-preserved burial with three Late Hellenistic vases (an oinochoe, a kantharos and a lamp with a single nozzle). Traces of a (probably funerary) pithos were revealed to the northeast of tomb II. Tomb III, a cist built of large stones, has also been disturbed probably during the initial opening of this pipeline.
