Description
Acharavi (property of Acharavi Garden Village AE). G. Metallinou (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a further portion of the Late Archaic and Classical cemetery known from previous local rescue excavations. Two strata were distinguished. The upper (of sandy soil, not encountered everywhere) included concentrations of sherds, stones and shells, as well as pyres. The lower (of pure sand) contained 58 graves (including 14 child burials) and one primary cremation. The graves comprised: 31 free burials or pits (in 10 cases the body was surrounded with graves, and two contained oxydised nails); four burials delimited by stones (in three instances beneath the head and/or feet, and in the fourth surrounding the burial); 22 tile graves (including one tile-covered pit); and an enchytrismos of a child in an amphora. There was no consistent arrangement orientation or particular grouping. Most graves lacked offerings; the few items found were mainly bowls and one-handled cups, plus black-figure lekythoi, a kantharos, lamp and a bronze arrowhead. These date the majority of graves in the southern part of the plot (below sea level) to the end of the fifth century.
