PATRAS - 145 P.P. Germanou and K. Palaiologou Streets - 2002

Patras, 145 P.P. Germanou and K. Palaiologou Streets (property of ‘Technikis Patron’ ATE – G. Athanasopoulos). G. Alexopoulou (Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of part of a main cobbled north-south road plus roadside buildings. A tile-covered drainage channel ran down the middle of the road. On the south side were large sections of imposing Hellenistic roadside buildings in stone. In the southwest corner of the plot was a Roman building in opus quasi reticulatum, with an associated cistern connected via a spur channel into the road drain. West of this building were sections of mosaic floor.

A later construction phase is represented by walls resting on the Hellenistic stone foundation and by further water channels over the road bed. There may have been a workshop in the area, noting also finds of loomweights. Finds include miniature coarse vessels, part of a figurine of a seated woman, loomweights, 15 bronze coins, a fluted column capital, bronze nails, and much Hellenistic and Roman pottery (including some second- to third-century AD Corinthian relief bowls depicting the Labours of Herakles).
