NAUPLION, Pronoia - 2002

Nauplion, Pronoia, 51-53 25th Martiou Street (property of G. Derzekou). Ch. Piteros (Δ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a section of the Venetian city aqueduct, and at greater depth on the north edge of the plot a Classical-Hellenistic stone-lined well which contained a cover tile. Geometric and Late Geometric pottery was found around the well and in a deposit slightly to the north. At a depth of 2.5-4m lay ten late Middle Helladic-Late Helladic I graves (nine stone-lined cists and a pit).

Tomb 1: the inhumation of a ca 18 year-old woman with nine small Middle Helladic pots (an askos, three kyathoi, a kalathiskos, two small bowls, a prochous, and a miniature tripod vessel), a bronze spiral and a bone pin.

Tomb 2: an adult inhumation on a gravel-covered floor, with no goods.

Tomb 3: the inhumation of an adult male with no goods.

Tomb 4: the inhumation of an adult male with a prochous with cut-away neck, a one-handled conical cup, a Vapheio cup, and bronze tweezers.

Tomb 5: the inhumation of an adult woman with no goods.

Tomb 6: the inhumation of an adult woman with no goods.

Tomb 7: not reported.

Tomb 8: the inhumation of a 12 year-old child, with a large kylix and an askos.

Tomb 9: the inhumation of an adult woman with a kyathos and a terracotta spindle whorl.

Tomb 10: a pit grave with cover slabs, containing the skeletons of a young sub-adult woman and a 12 year-old child, with no grave goods.

The following two fifth-century BC graves were found at the southern edge of the excavation:

Tomb 11: a pit covered with tiles, containing two pyxides.

Tomb 12: the inhumation of an adult woman with a bronze mirror and two bronze pins.
