ANCIENT EPIDAUROS - 2001

Ancient Epidauros, 27 Ioannou Metaxa Street (house of P.V. Georga). Ch. Piteros (Δ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of five Hellenistic tombs from the northeast cemetery of the city, cut into bedrock. Outside these tombs were found a satyr figurine, a knucklebone and Hellenistic pottery. Tombs 1-4 and 6 are simple cists with stone cover slabs, while tomb 5 is a tile grave.

Tomb 1: an adult inhumation with no goods.

Tomb 2: a disturbed adult inhumation with a lagynus and at the lower edge of the tomb iron shoe tacks, plus two crania from earlier burials.

Tomb 3: inhumation of an infant with no goods.

Tomb 4: no burial inside the grave, but displaced bones outside it.

Tomb 5: damaged tile grave, with the bones of an adult and a Hellenistic lamp found outside it.

Tomb 6: a few sherds and skeletal remains.
