Description
Leukakia. Ch. Piteros (Δ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that pipe-laying within the village revealed antiquities in a number of locations.
By the southeast corner of the Old School (Cultural Centre), a section of a stone built water channel with cement lining was found. This channel brought water from the well head in the northeast of the village southeast to a post-Byzantine fountain house.
Immediately south of the church of the Ipapanti, in an area where ancient kilns and the stone foundations of a building oriented east-west have previously been found, lay two stretches of limestone foundation oriented north-south, 2m apart. It is suggested that these foundations belong to a stoa.
Ca 21.15m to the north of the second of these foundations, a limestone foundation extended right across the east front of the church. It is suggested that this is the foundation of a stairway leading up to the large artificial platform on which stood a (probably Early Classical) temple (likely that of Apollo Pythaeos noted by Thucydides 5.53).
