Description
Troizen, Kato Vrysi (Maniati-Kontakou property). Ch. Koilakou (1st EBA) reports the discovery of the remains of a building with rooms oriented east-west, which had two building phases (A dating to late antiquity, and B to the Late Roman/Early Christian period) and showed signs of later incursions. A cist grave contemporary with phase B contained a large quantity of co-mingled skeletal remains and sherds, notably a Late Roman oinochoe. A destruction layer in the northwest part of the plot contained a concentration of burning and a dense deposit of tiles. Pottery from the excavation consisted of Late Roman-Early Christian plainwares, chiefly domestic and transport vessels, plus a quantity of third- to sixth-century lamps. Nine bronze coins span the fourth to the 19th centuries, but concentrate in the Late Roman period. The discovery of black-glaze pottery also implies earlier activity here.
