KERATOKAMPOS - 2002

Keratokampos. E. Banou (ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries in the area of Keratokampos during 2002 and 2003.

At Kastri Keratokampou (Schoinaki property) rescue excavation (begun in 1999) continued in the supposed area of the Hellenistic acropolis. A space bounded on three sides by walls contained a kiln, a buried pithos and a natural cavity filled with ash and charcoal. Many tiles came from the area, together with discoid loomweights, much coarse pottery, and a little fineware, including a third-century Megarian bowl. Elsewhere, a room was found with a destruction layer beneath which was a layer with numerous finds including pyramidal and discoid loomweights and a large number of figurines (including women carrying babies on their shoulders, women holding birds, women wearing chitones and jewellery, two Tanagra figurines, the head of a woman with a city-crown, and a bird). The pottery included Megarian bowls, small skyphoi, black-glazed lamps, olpes and storage vessels. Three more rooms are reported, but excavation was not completed.

On the Kokollakis property, a Late Minoan IIIA rock-cut tomb contained a larnax burial (the third such grave found in the area). Within the larnax was a cup, a double vessel (two joined cups), and beads of shell, bronze, faience, cornelian and clay. A further 15 pots were found outside the larnax.
