Description
Agios Ioannis (Phaistos). I. Antonakaki (ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries made at Agios Ioannis, south of the archaeological site of Phaistos, between 2001 and 2004.
On the Manousidaki property stretches of Protopalatial walling were discovered together with kamares ware pottery and coloured plaster on a Protopalatial floor. This is taken to confirm that the Protopalatial city of Phaistos stretched as far as this modern settlement. Two Hellenistic buildings were found in the same plot.
A Geometric chamber tomb with two dromoi was uncovered on the Kakoulaki property. One dromos is interpreted as being from a secondary phase of use. The tomb was looted in recent years, nonetheless 20 vases were recovered from it, plus a further 25 from the disturbed fill. Human bones, pierced sea-shells, a bronze ring, two bronze pins and a fibula were also found.
