Description
Agia Photeini. N. Karamaliki (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports.
On the Markidi property (within ancient Sybritos) Roman building remains include eight rooms/open areas of two phases, with walls of unworked stones and earthen floors. Numerous tiles came from the destruction layer. Only one or two rooms contained finds including pithoi (one with metal clamps), lekanes, amphorae, and lamps. The few coins found place the destruction in the mid third century AD. A fourth-century BC dedicatory inscription, the first Classical inscription found in the city, was found in the surface layer.
On the Neonaki property, a Hellenistic-Roman house and the corner of another building were uncovered. The house had six discernable rooms and one open space. The only finds reported from the Roman phase are some loomweights. But from the Hellenistic phase at least one room (1) had a sealed floor deposit with 30 pots (pithoi, lekanes, prochoi, cups, beehives, lamps and lids), 20 loomweights, stone tools, nails and fragments of metal vases. Elsewhere Hellenistic finds were preserved under the Roman floors and in a pit under a Roman wall.
