Description
Gavdos Island. P. Drosinou (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports.
Three Roman farmsteads or small rural complexes were found at Agios Pavlos and Sarakiniko (Tsirmiri hill and Ammoutses). Each had three rooms: the first had an installation for wine production and the other two had olive presses. The farm at Tsirmiri hill is dated to the third century AD and that at Ammoutses to the first half of the second century AD.
Minoan buildings are reported at Korphos and on the Votsano-Korphos path. The first dates from Middle to Late Minoan and is characterised as a workshop.
A plundered Roman chamber tomb was found at ‘tou Kapouri to aulaki’ near Korphos. The long walls of the chamber are oriented north-south but the stepped dromos is in the east. An arrowhead, bronze coin and ring and an iron weapon were recovered from the fill, together with fragments of pottery and glass vessels, human and animal bone.
Twelve pots, said to be from a Final Neolithic pit grave, were collected at Vrysalia, also close to Korphos. An early Christian rock-cut cist grave containing two burials was found at Kedres.
