Description
Chania, Parodos Kanevaro (Kastelli Hill). M. Andreadaki-Vlazaki (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavations along the full extent of this street, close to the top of Kastelli hill. Medieval and early modern walls, floors, and pits had substantially damaged ancient levels, sometimes even reaching bedrock. First millennium, especially Roman, activity is attested by pottery in disturbed layers and pits. Walls and four successive floors are dated to eighth century, while Late Minoan III was attested only by pottery beneath the Geometric features and within disturbed Minoan levels. In the Middle Minoan period, the bedrock in the area was levelled for the construction of a wall. Several walls and a stone-paved area are dated to the Neopalatial period, as is a clay roundel with a Linear A inscription and nine seal impressions. A large fill with Early Minoan III/Middle Minoan IA pottery sealed the Early Minoan II habitation level: elsewhere successive floors of the same period are reported. Several walls and successive floor levels, some with pottery in situ, date to the Early Minoan period. At the lowest level, in the east of the area, a large number of circular depressions cut into the rock are interpreted as post-holes for Neolithic or Early Bronze Age houses. Their layout was irregular and no pottery was found to date them.
