PERDIKA, Dymokastro - 2001

Perdika, Dymokastro. G. Riginos (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on continuing excavation at the settlement identified as ancient Elina, focused on Buildings A and Γ.

In Building A, the destruction deposit revealed across the entire area was partially removed: the southeast corner room of the building was revealed, with walls of worked and well-fitted limestone blocks founded on bedrock. Small sections of wall in the north and east part of the room likely belong to earlier building phases. To the north, between walls discovered in 2000, were bedrock exposures with a layer of tile between them (indicating that the area was roofed). Pottery from the building was mostly plain Hellenistic domestic and fine table ware plus a little black-glaze. Finds also included six bronze coins, iron and bronze nails, lead sheet, three loomweights, two female figurines, a glass vessel, and pieces of plaster with traces of red paint.

Building Γ lies in the southeast part of Acropolis A to the right of the path which leads from the main gate of the settlement up to the central part of the acropolis. The building (ca 6x14m) was mostly cut into bedrock: it was entered from the southeast via a levelled platform and steps (two flights of four and five steps with a platform between them), and had at least two rooms. The northwest room, which was partially investigated, had cuttings for five klinai around the walls, and was probably an andron. Outside the northwest wall, a water channel led down into a natural hollow in the rock outside the building. Hellenistic plain domestic and black-glaze pottery was collected.
