Description
Michaliari, Filiates. G. Riginos (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of part of an early modern settlement cut by a 4m-wide stone kalderimi. Two road-side buildings were investigated (A and B), with dry stone walls using semi-worked stones. Building A (11x16.9m) had three rooms – two smaller aligned with the road (I and II) and a large courtyard (III) behind, with which they communicate. Room one contained a probable hearth: beneath the destruction layer in room II was a clay and plaster floor surface (the floor being partially cut into bedrock): the courtyard was also entered from the west, away from the road. Building B (18.3x20.5m), higher upslope, had the same basic plan as Building A. Construction material from this building included pieces of the lime plaster which likely covered the walls.
Finds include a large quantity of mostly glazed pottery, a few iron nails, iron masses, and a clay spool. The construction technique, the form of rooftile and the near exclusive presence of glazed pottery indicate a post-Byzantine date.
