Description
Ai Iannis, Kamara (S. Kapharaki property). G. Metallinou (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a cemetery including a semi-circular funerary peribolos enclosing burials. The peribolos walls were built of unworked stone and mud. Five graves comprise a simple cist (1), a burial defined by stones but without cover (4), tile graves (2, 5) and a grave with multiple covering materials (3). They contained supine inhumations of both men and women of young and advanced adult age. No offerings survived intact, but a very few, chiefly Hellenistic sherds were collected. Grave 5, which contained a double burial, was covered by three to five layers of tiles including those with X incision which remained characteristic into the Late Roman period. Finds from the area comprise Hellenistic pottery, two fourth- to third-century transport amphora toes, eight loomweights, the handle of a bronze vessel, and six fifth- to first-century bronze coins (including three of Corfu and one each of Macedonia and Kephallonia).
