Description
Figareto, Kanoni. Doukaki property. A. Karamanou and J. Provata (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) report that continuing excavation revealed two (and perhaps three) building complexes. A series of cross-walls defined further long, narrow rooms in complex A, including a bathroom (containing a terracotta bathtub and a quantity of lachrymateria and with a stone-paved floor) added in a subsequent building phase. While it appears that the structure had undergone many alterations, it is suggested that its unusual plan may indicate a public function. Of complex B, only a long stretch of the street wall opposite complex A is preserved: two different construction techniques are observed at east and west (the latter resting on a large krepidoma, which is again taken to suggest a public building). Only a small part of complex Γ is preserved at the north-east part of the plot. Two parallel walls likely define a cross street running from the 2.9m-wide main road which ran between complexes A and B. To the east lay part of a floor and other very poorly preserved traces of construction. The main road (of which the surface was not traced) evidently ran down to the harbour from the sanctuaries on the hill. Architectural spolia from temples were found both in the present excavation and during previous campaigns here in 1987-8 (ADelt 42 [1987] Chr, 337-40; ADelt 43 [1988] Chr, 340-2). Finds indicate continuous activity from very early Archaic (and perhaps Geometric) times until the Roman period. The pottery includes very early sherds, as a Geometric krater rim (cf. CGA 150, pl.122), plus a janiform plastic Daedalic head (likely a knob from a pyxis lid). One hundred and thirteen bronze coins have so far been found, most Kerkyraian issues of the period 300-229 BC. One exception is a fourth-century BC issue of Terina in Calabria, depicting a crab on the reverse.
