Description
Figareto, Kanoni. Lazou property. G.-K. Avgerinou (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a stretch of the road leading from the heights of the city down to the Hyllaian Harbour. Bounded by a Classical wall on each side, it is paved with stones of varying sizes, infilled with sherds, small stones and mud. A thick, overlying destruction layer contained stones, much pottery, broze nails and other items, lead sheet and a lead tool. The boundary walls continue beyond the boundaries of the plot towards the harbour, beneath the modern Montsenigou building. Two stone-built wells, in use from the Archaic to the Classical period, were found in the northwest of the plot. Activity on the plot dates from the seventh century to the Roman period. Finds include a Late Protocorinthian alabastron (650-40 BC), a sixth-century Kerkyraian enthroned figurine, an Attic black-glaze amphoriskos (430-20), a terracotta lamp (300-250), and 15 bronze coins including one Kephallonian issue (400-300 BC) and one of Kerkyra (229-48 AD).
